Tree Service Questions, Answered
When should I trim oak trees in Iowa?
The best time to trim oak trees in Iowa is November 1 through mid-March. The Iowa DNR recommends this winter window because oaks are dormant and the beetles that spread oak wilt are less active (Iowa DNR news release, Oct. 6, 2026). The DNR lists March 15 to August 1 as the high-risk period for oak wilt (Iowa DNR oak wilt page). If an oak is damaged in a storm outside the winter window, the DNR advises covering the fresh wound right away with latex or acrylic paint. Grounded Tree Co. books oak trimming in Panora, Lake Panorama and central Iowa all winter.
